7 Must-Cycle Bike Paths in Quebec

Is the beautiful summer weather calling you outdoors? Why not make the most of the season by exploring a new region of the Belle Province by bicycle?

Whether it be as a family, as a couple, or on one’s own; as a sport or as recreation; in an urban or natural setting, cycling is a fun activity enjoyed by all. Moreover, several routes are far from requiring users to be Olympic-level athletes. Even children will find they can follow along with little difficulty.

And we are quite lucky: Quebec is home to magnificent trails dedicated to two-wheeled sightseeing! Need proof? Here are 7 superb bike paths that are sure to please!

1.   The Estriade (Eastern Townships)

As its name suggests, this bike path is in the beautiful Eastern Townships region. This circuit is a fully paved 97 km loop across various natural landscapes, such as valleys, fields and shorelines, and is easy enough to be enjoyed by the entire family.

2.   The Véloroute des Bleuets (Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean)

With its gently sloping and mostly flat route, this 256 km cycling path is perfect for shorter legs—so long as you haven’t planned on a day-long peddling expedition! The itinerary runs through approximately fifteen villages and towns. An ideal opportunity to admire houses and uncover your dream home if you happen to be interested in relocating to the area!

3.   The Voie Maritime Bicycle Path (Montreal)

With the city of Montreal as a backdrop, this is the one for taking great selfies. This route allows you to travel across the island via the Champlain Bridge and provides the best views of the southern shore. And thanks to the metropolis’s dynamic character, it’s sure to be an exciting journey throughout! Have a bite to eat at a local restaurant or a quick chat with passersby during your breaks.

4.   The Véloroute des Baleines (Côte-Nord)

The more athletic and adventurous among us will want to make the trip to Route 138, between Tadoussac and Baie-Comeau to be more exact, to test their mettle against this high intensity cycling path. Wending its way between the sea on one side and the mountains on the other, this 300 km route is composed of curves, sharp descents, and steep climbs that will get your quads pumping. In return, you will be rewarded by spectacular and restful views of the St-Lawrence River. Plus, you may even be fortunate enough to see certain species of whales, such as the blue whale and beluga.

5.   The Massif (Charlevoix)

Want an even bigger challenge? Since 2019, the Massif de la Petite-Rivière-Saint-François ski mountain offers downhill mountain biking. Two new expert-level trails as well as a beginner circuit for families are currently open. By the end of summer 2022, a further 20 kilometres will have been added to the existing 20 km. The site will thus double its mountain bike trail surface area, which will remain accessible every day until October 10.

6.   The Parcours des Anses (Chaudière-Appalaches)

This 15 km route is open to cyclist, hikers and in-line skaters. You can stroll through Quebec City, admiring its unique architecture: the bridges, fortifications, the Château Frontenac and the Île d’Orléans. It is a leisurely path full of gems for you to discover.

7.   La VéloRoute d’Argenteuil (Laurentides)

These 54 kilometres of cycling and hiking trails between the Laurentides and Outaouais regions feature the Desjardins footbridge, a breathtaking 65-metre suspension bridge over the North River. You will likewise find numerous snacking and meal options as well as several tourist attractions.

So, what are you waiting for? Get on your bike and feast your eyes on magnificent views. No one can deny that the province of Quebec has great breadth and variety of natural environments to behold. Conversely, for many people, cycling in urban areas is just as pleasant as it gives them the opportunity to explore neighbourhoods. It’s up to you to decide on which cycling adventure checks all your boxes!
